How Diagonal Connections Work in WordBlockCrush
WordBlockCrush lets you connect neighboring letters horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. Diagonal movement matters because it opens far more routes than a rows-only puzzle. A word can turn at every letter, which means the best path may zigzag through several directions instead of following a straight line.
The eight-direction rule
From any letter, you may move to any adjacent block: left, right, up, down, or one of the four diagonals. The next block must touch the current block at an edge or corner. A jump over another block is not a legal connection.
A path may turn
Your route does not need to remain horizontal or diagonal. You can move right, then diagonally down, then up, as long as each new block touches the last one. This freedom makes bends and hooks valuable, especially near the center of the 6x6 grid where each tile has more neighbors.
Do not reuse the same tile
A single board tile can appear only once in the submitted path. If a word needs the same letter twice, you must find two separate blocks carrying that letter. Crossing near an earlier part of the path is fine, but selecting an already used block again is not.
Scan diagonals without losing the word
Start with a visible two- or three-letter stem, then inspect all eight neighbors around its final letter. Say the letters silently as you extend the route. If an extension fails, return to the last valid stem and try a different neighbor instead of restarting the entire search.
Use the center for longer routes
Center blocks offer up to eight possible next steps, while corner blocks offer only three. When two versions of a word are available, the route that finishes near the center often leaves more extension choices. Edge and corner routes can still be useful when they clear a crowded column.
Practice with common endings
Look for paths that can add S, ED, ER, ING, or LY to a valid stem. The ending may sit diagonally from the last letter. Longer words earn larger bonuses, so checking one extra ring of neighboring tiles can produce a meaningful scoring jump.
